Description
Terpineol MU Grade is a synthetic monoterpene alcohol made by hydrating alpha-pinene or gum turpentine. Rather than a single isomer, it's a blend of terpineol isomers — mainly alpha-terpineol, with beta- and gamma-terpineol present in smaller amounts (the latter two differ only in where their double bond sits).
This grade is purpose-built for industrial and medical formulation work, prized as a strong solvent for ethylcellulose, an effective plasticiser for epoxy resins, and a key building block in fragrance synthesis.
The alpha-terpineol content also gives it notable germicidal activity against organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans — trials report skin-spray applications killing up to 98.46% of naturally occurring surface bacteria, which is what makes this grade well suited to medical disinfection and sterilisation products.

FAQ
What is Terpineol and what is it used for?
Terpineol is a naturally occurring terpene alcohol found in pine oil, lavender oil, orange leaf oil and neroli oil, widely used in fragrance formulation — especially soaps and synthetic detergents.
What are the major industrial applications of Terpineol?
Fragrance and cosmetics, household product fragrance (cleaning agents, soaps, shampoo), solvent for ethylcellulose, plasticizer for epoxy resin, and electronic cleaning in flat-panel display (PDP) manufacturing.
What is the difference between Alpha-Terpineol and Terpineol?
Terpineol exists as four isomers — alpha-, beta- and gamma-terpineol plus terpinen-4-ol — and alpha-terpineol is the dominant, most commercially important one; commercial "Terpineol" is typically a blend dominated by the alpha isomer.
What does Terpineol smell like?
It has a pine-like, clove-like odor, with many grades carrying a pleasant lilac-like fragrance note.
Which industries use Terpineol?
Fragrance and perfumery, daily chemical (soap/detergent) manufacturers, medical/disinfectant formulators, industrial solvent and plasticizer users, and electronics manufacturers.
How is Terpineol produced from pine-derived terpenes?
It's produced by hydrating alpha-pinene or gum turpentine, yielding a blend of terpineol isomers dominated by alpha-terpineol.
What are the important physical and chemical properties of Terpineol?
It's typically a colorless to pale yellowish liquid, molecular formula C10H18O, molecular weight 154.25, with a lilac-like fragrance.
What purity grades of Terpineol are available?
Grades include Normal, Perfumery Grade (PG), Extra Pure (EP), Commercial, CP, DG, Mehendi Grade (MG) and MU (medical/industrial grade), each with different purity, colour and application focus.
How is Terpineol used in fragrances, cleaners, and chemical formulations?
It's a common ingredient in perfumes, cosmetics and household cleaners, and the MU grade's alpha-terpineol content also gives it notable germicidal activity useful in medical disinfectant formulations.
How should Terpineol be stored and handled?
Store flammable materials in a dedicated safety cabinet away from heat and ignition sources, keeping containers tightly closed in a cool, well-ventilated location.
Who supplies Terpineol MU in bulk?
Himalaya Terpenes Pvt. Ltd. (Mumbai, India) supplies Terpineol MU in bulk, in drums, bags, IBCs or ISO tanks depending on the grade, for domestic and export orders. The company is an ISO 9001:2015-certified pine-chemical manufacturer operating since 1971.
